Stretching has long been used in both warm up and cool down regime to reudece lieklihood of injury. Stretching routinely before and after exercise may assist in maintaining muscle flexibility. This degree of flexibility may assist in reducing the chance of an injury occurring as your muscles may have more “give” in them. The “give” or compliance indicates that if a muscle (which is routinely stretched) is placed into a compromising position it may have reduction in the chance of sustaining a muscle strain/tear that would more likely occur in a less compliant muscle. This occurs as the muscle can somewhat stretch or absorb impact rather than a stiff muscle which simply tears. Stretching should be performed before and after a routine in combination with a warm-up/down program.
